The importance of a breast center in terms of diagnosis of breast disease is that you want a facility which offers diagnosis, biopsy capabilities, and management of breast cancer and hopefully a fellowship trained breast imager who can also provide these services.
What a woman would expect the day of her mammogram is a warm friendly smile at our front desk, a wonderful experience with our technologist (who sets the patient at ease prior to the mammogram), we will be asking questions regarding the family history and past diagnosis and then they will have their mammogram or ultrasound procedure or biopsy procedure as it may be and then some patients will receive their results the same day. Screening patients generally will not; they will get a letter in the mail stating what the results are and if any further treatment is necessary.
Teamwork is essential at a breast center because we are doing many different procedures on our patients and they require phone calls, follow up, hand-holding at many points as well, and we provide all of that.
