Patient wait times are a major concern, not only to my office and my office staff, but to the patients who come to visit us. I hear stories all the time about patients coming to a physician and they sit in the office an hour, two hours waiting to be seen. I insist, in my office, that patients are seen on time. We firmly believe that patient's time is as valuable as ours and making patients wait unnecessarily is both inappropriate and disrespectful. We try as hard as we possibly can to make sure patients are seen in a timely fashion and my goal is that if the patient arrives on time, they will be seen on time. We regularly have patients who are coming for their first visit arrive 20 to 30 minutes ahead of time to get all the paper work out of the way. So they are seen at the time they are scheduled to be seen, that's not only fair to them and makes the most use of their time. It also is fair to the other patients who arrive on time so they can be seen on schedule as well.
In my office, the goal is for patients not to wait at all. We strive very hard to have the patients into the lab area with their vital signs being taken within five minutes of them arriving and checking in. By the same token, patients do not sit in an empty examining room waiting for me once those things are complete. I see them within the same five minutes.
Short wait times are important because patients have things to do. Their time is as valuable as anyone else's, and it's a sign of respect for that patient that their time is appreciated.
