Mental illness is recognized in young adults basically by their teachers, by their family, sometimes by their friends. Everybody behaves for themselves and is recognized by their peers in the normal behavior (what they consider their normal behavior) and most people will be able to identify if there's any deviation from that. If a person is experiencing some type of worry, for whatever they know, what is normal for grief...it's normal to have if somebody dies and somebody you care about is sick, it's normal to be grieving but there's a point where that becomes dysfunctional, where it's out of the norm and that brings a red flag and you may need to go to a hospital for that situation. If it's uncorrected it could get a lot worse.
Mental illness is out in the open more now because I think people are recognizing-I think it's been in this society just as much, but I think people are becoming a little bit smarter about it. They're becoming-they're reading a lot more, they're hearing a lot of things on the news, they're people- they- everybody knows somebody that's had depression. I don't think anybody you know is-has been unaffected by that or bi-polar disorder, so people are getting-they're starting to-the stigma's starting to break down but there still is a stigma with psychiatric illness because a lot of people-one thing with medical, if somebody has a heart condition and you tell them to take their medication, almost everybody will take that medication. If you have 25 people in a room with psychiatric medication, part of the thing is they're intelligent people, but they'll say, "I want to be normal, that's why I stopped taking the medication" even though if you sat them down beforehand and said, you know, "the medication is making you feel better right? then why did you stop?" and they'll just tell you that they want to feel normal. It's a big thing, so when you-the actual stigma of mental illness actually perpetuates the illness because they stop taking the medication because they want to feel normal, but they're not feeling normal. They're decompensating because of that.
People are so afraid of mental illness because I think it's characterized in very ineffective ways. I've heard people say, like, people coming in, even visitors, "these people are crazy" or you know "I betcha that person would smack me if I turned around." Some people think everybody that has a mental illness is gonna harm them or gonna do something to them or do something to their family and it's just not true. Very few people that are mentally ill are very aggressive. I've worked in this business for a lot of time. There's people that need medication and stuff like that, but basically the majority of them are not are not gonna harm somebody.
I think sometimes just the state of affairs...if you have somebody that's struggling with that and they start coping with faulty things, such as drugs or alcohol, and a number of friends and family tell them, "look something's going on here you're not dealing with this." Some people end up getting arrested, they get into the legal system, some people go to a hospital 10 or 12 times a year and finally it may dawn on them that, "you know what? Maybe I do have a little bit of a problem." If somebody says you have an anger problem and you've been divorced 6 times and your kids hate you, at one point you're gonna have to look at that and say, "you know maybe I do have an anger problem." But I had a guy that was in the hospital- I asked him- he had been divorced 8 times and I said "what is your-you've contributed to that marriage that you think that you know all of your marriages that you've contributed why they didn't work," and he looked at me with a straight face and he said "I just made 8 bad choices." He had no insight into anything he did, you can't teach that. Sometimes people just develop it after situations.
